Simon Ng'ang'a Kingara the member of parliament Ruiru constituency, Kiambu County is a renowned philanthropist.
King’ara, a first-time MP and who was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket on August 8 General election, is the chairman of the Simon King’ara Foundation.
The Foundation seeks to improve the socio-economic status of women and youth in Ruiru especially those who come from slums and poor backgrounds.
King'ara first launched his political career in 2013 when he unsuccessfully vied for Ruiru constituency seat. He lost to Esther Gathogo which he blamed on the party he vied on, Saba Saba Asili. Five years later, he was to digrace Gathogo badly by clinching the Jubilee party ticket.
King’ara's foundation has been active since 2013 and has been implementing various projects on education, community welfare, health, environment, grants, among other things in the grassroots.
The foundation has for instance used farming as a mode of transforming lives of street boys in Ruiru town, Githurai and Mwihoko.
"We purchased a one-acre piece of land in Kabati, Murang’a county where 30 street boys are rearing 1500 indigenous chicken. This is aimed at reducing crime rates in Ruiru and to deal with drug and alcohol abuse among the youth," King'ara told a local vernacular radio station recently during an interview.
He added that at the farm, they now have over 30 youths rearing poultry while 23 others are preparing a site in Gikumari area in Ruiru where the foundation intends to start dairy farming.
"All the profit from the sale of farm go to their account which I will guide them on how they can start other ventures,” Kingara added.
The MP believes that by giving youth 'that much needed support', he is empowering for greater things tomorrow which will bring about social-economic transformation in Ruiru and Kenya at large.
He also believes that there should be no street children as it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure that children are well taken care of and get the necessary education. That could be the reason his foundation give bursaries to needy students in Ruiru.
