As the race towards the 2017 pre-election campaigns intensify, the incumbent Garissa senator Yussuf Haji stands a good chance of being elected unopposed.
So far, there is not even a single aspirant that has shown interest in the position, a fact that is speculated to be a walk over for the long serving Garissa politician.
Even though Haji has not officially announced plans on his political career, there is widespread rumour that he is set to defend his seat, insisting he will make the decision when the right time comes.
"I will inform my area residents as to whether I will vie stand to defend my current position when the right time comes. I would never wish to comment on this subject for now. But I will do so right on time. I will call journalists and let my people know of my next move,” Haji revealed.
However, political analysts say the seat might not have attracted contestants because it is widely perceived to be Haji’s.
“Defeating senator Haji is one of the very big tasks that nobody can attempt at the moment. As long as he shows interest in retaining the seat, he will easily get hold of it. Haji commands massive respect across all Garissa communities,” a close source disclosed.
