Somali base in Kisumu is one of the most dreaded places in the region owing to increased cases of criminal activities.
The place has seen a number of gangs emerge including the infamous 40 gang brothers.
Last year, rowdy youth in the area forced back the former Governor Ranguma and its motorcade as he was campaigning in the area
The area is also the star point of demonstrations in Kisumu. The Locals, a majority who are the youth always inspire massive demonstrations which in most cases have turned violent leading to loss of lives and property. In some instances, they have been known to block roads during demonstrations and ask for money to allow motorists access town.
Most youth in the area are jobless and therefore engage in criminal activities to sustain their livelihood. The youth also consume illegal drugs after which they start terrorizing residents.
Despite being next to Kondele Police station, the area still records the highest number of criminal activities in Kisumu.
Reports indicate that Somali base is also a market place where goons are hired by the powerful people in society
