Although Nairobi governor Mike Sonko may be a man out to fulfill the promises he made to the electorate ahead of the 2017 general election, his means of achieving those promises betray him.

Sonko is currently trying to use a street mentality to solve the problems in Nairobi and this will backfire easily.

His recent anti-mugging squad was constituted to fight crime in the CBD; but just how effective will this be?

Muggings will continue to be there as long as the confusion observed in the CBD continues to persist.

Criminal gangs thrive where confusion reigns. With the influx of hawkers in the city, it will be difficult containing the young delinquents who find a sense of security in large crowds.

But just how is Sonko going to intimidate the young boys into becoming law-abiding?

His anti-mugging squad is expected to be brutal and ruthless on the perceived criminals; they will use more force.

It goes without saying that any perceived pickpockets will be beaten up by the new 'cops' on the block.

They will move by the mob psychology without giving room for fair hearing and determination of the allegations.
