Senator Mike Sonko is likely to garner more votes from tenants than his rivals after he promised to reduce rent once he ascends to power.

Sonko, who has been a strong supporter of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has said that he will relieve tenants the burden of paying too much rent if he becomes the next county boss.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with a local station, Sonko said that his government will put in place measures to cut the cost of living.

“The cost of living especially house rent has really gone up due to the 100% increment of taxes like land rates imposed on landlords by the county government,” he said as Nairobi News quoted.

The outspoken senator, who is known for his luxurious lifestyle, revealed that he raised the issue at the Senate.

"I have raised the matter in senate and even went to court where I was enjoined by a number of residents associations in support of my suit but the matter is still pending at the court of appeal,” he added.

The senator further said that he intends to sink boreholes in different parts of the county once he takes over Kidero when that time comes.

“Once elected within 50 days we will sink free boreholes in every city estate that is experiencing water shortage. Drilling water in Nairobi takes only two days as the water in Nairobi is just 100 metres away,” Sonko said.
