Although the Kisii County governor James Ongwae and South Mogirango MP Silvanus Osoro are pushing for the construction of the sugar factory at Nyangweta Forest, it is the last thing the residents may want in the area because of many reasons.
First, the Construction will not be of great importance given that Nyangweta Forest is being destroyed to give room for the factory.
As the country is taking an initiative to carry out campaigns of planting trees and maintaining the country green, the county government want to destroy the only forest in Kisii County for a factory.
Second, the gusto at which governor Ongwae and area MP Osoro are pushing for the construction portrays many things. Either they have squandered the money for the developer or they have a stake in the project. If it is the case, it means the construction of the factory is going to benefit few individuals through looting.
Third, sugar processing business is what people from South Nyanza and western Kenya are running from due to non-profitability of the business given the COMESA trade agreement and generally unethical business practices from sugar importing cartels.
Instead of this sugar factory that other people are running away from, an avocado plant should be set given that the county produces more avocados. This will befit the farmers more rather than the sugar factory.
Equally, the county government should set cold storage buildings in which the farmers store their avocados as they await transportation.
