Withdrawal of opposition chief Raila Odinga in the repeat presidential election has been cited as the main reason behind low voter turnout witnessed in most parts across the country.
According to Soy Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany, a majority of Jubilee supporters did not participate in the election with an assumption that President Uhuru Kenyatta would automatically win after Raila pulled out.
Addressing the press at the Soy constituency tallying center in Eldoret town on Friday, Kositany further said ongoing heavy rains also had a negative impact on the number of voters who participated in the repeat poll.
"We had 62% voter turnout in my constituency compared to 78% in August and this is partly because most supporters thought even if few people voted President Kenyatta would still win after Raila pulled out," said the Jubilee.
"The fact that the elections came at such a time also had an effect as some people had traveled back to their workplaces after August," he added.
Results already announced indicate that no constituency has registered over 70 percent voter turnout.
