Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Sunday at a church in Njiru, Nairobi sensationally claimed that there was a scheme to transfer and subsequently eliminate one of his bodyguards who has since been withdrawn from the governor.

Sonko said the reason why the officer's life was in danger is that he had revealed to the governor instructions he had been given by a certain Principal Secretary to spike the county boss's drink with poison which he refused to heed.

''I don't want the bodyguards but I will fight for their rights. The bodyguard who told me that the PS wanted me dead is in the process of being transferred and they now want him dead so that the evidence will not come out,'' the governor claimed.

Sonko's claims mark a dramatic twist in the fast-paced drama pitting himself against elements in the national government that shows no signs of abating.

His words come in the wake of a significant downsizing of his security detail which did not sit well with him.
