[Photo: Thika Today]Two kids from Thika's Makongeni area have put Kenya on the world map after they all bagged gold medals during the FSKA World Karate Championships in London last Sunday. The two, Monica Wangari,12 and 8-year-old Emmanuel Kamenchu each won gold in the individual 'Kumite' category in a competition that had brought together 600 competitors from around 24 countries which included America, Russia, France and the host UK.While receiving the duo at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after arriving on Wednesday, Thika Town MP Eng Patrick Wainaina, congratulated them and promised them support."I take this opportunity to congratulate you for the fantastic performance in London and for the great pride you have brought to Kenya and more so Thika town constituency. I assure you that we will allocate some funds towards this noble activity from our NG-CDF to support your team which will facilitate training, uniforms among other essential things," Wainaina said. The team's coach, Elizabeth Rukwaro, couldn't hide her joy following the kids' performance saying that they had endured several challenges during training."These children lacked the basic training facilities despite the fact that they were facing competitors who had everything in terms of training, facilitation among other necessities," said Rukwaro."Though the Kiambu County Government has been very supportive of us, the financial help we get hasn't been sufficient. They gave us Sh300,000 which was too little and we had to fundraise from the kids' parents," she added.Last year, the two participated in the World qualifiers in India where they qualified for the just-concluded World Championships in London. However, this achievement has been after vigorous training, since 2009, at Kenyatta Primary School at Makongeni, Thika which has no facilities for such training.
