The Munyuyahya (a Cushitic offshoot tribe) and the Wailuwana (a Bantu group), do not condone sexual misconduct owing to their various superstitious beliefs.

Women from these communities are also not allowed to have sex with their husbands 80 days after giving birth.

Those who are intimate with their men during the day or before the 80 days are over receive severe punishment following a community court process.

Adula Tutuna, a member of the all-women Hirimani jury says that new mothers who are forbidden from engaging in sex are also forbidden from cooking or serving their husbands before the traditional 80 days of Hirimani, which means lactating period, has elapsed.

Tutuna said a young man who was frogmarched to the court room under an acacia tree was punished after he was caught trying to have sex with his wife a month after she just delivered a baby boy.

“A young man tried breaking the laws of Hirimani and found himself in deep trouble. To prove to the newly married man that his offence was so serious, even his mother testified against him,” said Tutuna as quoted by sde.co.ke.

Hadulla Tutata, a Hirimani ‘Chief Justice’ in Mororo slums, in Galole Constituency, Tana River said that the reason as to why having sex during the day is forbidden is because is akin to “displaying nakedness in public”.
