The politics of the North Eastern region and specifically Garissa county cannot be complete without mentioning Senator Yusuf Haji.
The former Minister has been around for decades and has contributed to key political decisions in the region.
Many people know Haji as an old school politician who served in various government positions right from Jomo Kenyatta's era, Moi's regime and part of Kibaki's rule in 2002.
His brilliant career in the public service began way back in 1970 in the Provincial Administration where he served as the Provincial Commissioner for the North Eastern province before getting into politics in 1998 after being nominated as a Member of Parliament.
In 2003, he was elected to the National Assembly as the Ijaara constituency representative a position he held until the 2013 election when he contested for the Senatorial seat.
In 2013, he won the Garissa Senatorial seat and successfully defended it in the 2017 general election.
He is a close ally of the President and his son was recently nominated to the position of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Despite new leaders coming up in the region like Leader of Minority Aden Duale, Haji has still been instrumental in North Eastern's politics.
Going forward, Haji is still a force to reckon with and should he decide to vie again he will give his opponents a hard time as he is loved by the locals.
