Traffic commandants and owners of PSVs alongside the officials of PSV Sacco could be jailed for accidents on the road if proposed amendments by parliament are passed.

The transport committee says this is aimed at ensuring that all players involved in road safety campaigns are held responsible for the safety of passengers on the roads.

These amendments will now target these critical players in the industry.

“It is not going to be bossiness, as usual, the traffic commandant who has allowed that to happen will go to jail,” says David Pkosing, the transport committee parliamentary member.

He adds: “The owner of the matatu, the whole Sacco, the CEO. It is the responsibility of the owners and the Sacco to ensure they have everything fitted. If the car is said to have caused an accident because of overspending, the owner and the CEO will go to jail,”

The proposals come int eh wake of increased cases of road accidents that have been witnessed in the country in the last two months.

The NTSA and the police who together have been in charge of road safety were hardpressed to explain why they have not been able to carry out their mandate satisfactorily.
