The extradition of slain drug baron Ibraham Akasha’s sons a few days ago is an indicator that the United States of America (USA) is committed to the fight against drugs.
Thus it came as a surprise to many that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho toured the US amidst claims of drug trafficking.
Political analysts say that Joho’s successful trip to the US is a great boost to his political career, adding that it is evident that the governor has mastered the art of fighting his opponents.
A few weeks ago, Joho publicly differed with President Uhuru Kenyatta, and accused him of hijacking projects initiated by past regimes.
Before the dust settled, the government declared war on drug barons in Mombasa, with Joho claiming he was being linked to the illegal business in a bid to discredit him ahead of the August polls.
According to Standard Digital, Joho secretly penned a letter to the US Embassy in Nairobi indicating his willingness to be probed over the drug trafficking allegations.
“He surrendered to the US Embassy his bank details, names of companies in which he was a director and invited Nairobi-based Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents to probe him,” said a confidant, as quoted by SDE.
The source added that the FBI declared Joho a clean man.
“The US Embassy later issued visas to his entire family and his brothers have been visiting in the US ever since,” added the source.
