The appointment of Dr Fred Matiang’i as Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary received mixed reactions, with some Kenyans saying it came “too soon” after the death of Joseph Nkaissery.
Nkaissery passed on at around 1am on Saturday.
The Star reports that President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday appointed Education CS Fred Matiang’i to take over the Interior docket after advice from the Security Council members.
The Council settled on Matiang’i due to his “firmness and commitment to a course”, the newspaper says.
“After brainstorming over the sad events and state of the country’s security, the meeting, chaired by the President, settled on Matiang’i who has a similar work ethic to the late minister,” a source told the Star.
Uhuru while announcing the appointment, said he acted swiftly to ensure there is no vacuum in the security docket.
Members of the Security Council are; President, Deputy President, the Defence, Foreign Affairs and Internal Security CSs, Attorney General, the chief of the KDF, the NIS director general and Inspector general of Police.
