Attorney General Githu Muigai told the select committee on IEBC led by Senators Kiraitu Murungi and James Orengo that if the current IEBC team is sent home, it would require around 24 months to train new officials.
“If we tell the IEBC commissioners to go home, we will need a minimum of 24 months and this is so expensive, politically,” Muigai said.
From Ag's assessment, next year's general election will have to be postponed from August 2017 to mid-2018, thus extending President Kenyatta's tenure in office.
Muigai further noted that should the commissioners resign, a challenge will emerge on the guiding structure for compensation since there is no formal structure on the issue.
