President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday explained why he did not issue Garissa University College with a charter alongside other institutions.

According to the Head of State, he will personally travel to Garissa and hand over the charter.

Speaking at State House Nairobi, Uhuru sated that his decision was to travel to Garissa and send a message to terrorists that the country will not be cowed.

Last year in April, the institution was attacked by Al Shabaab terrorists who massacred almost 150 students.

The incident led to temporary closure of the institution.

The President was speaking at State House when he awarded charters to eight to universities.

The eight new universities that were awarded charters were KAG East University in Kajiado County, Rongo University in Migori County, the Cooperative University of Kenya in Nairobi County and Taita Taveta University in Taita-Taveta County.

 The others were Murang’a University of Technology in Murang’a County, University of Embu in Embu County, Machakos University in Machakos County and Kirinyaga University in Kirinyaga County.
