In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta took only 14 days after being sworn-in to the office to name his cabinet, however in 2017, it is already 25 days since his inauguration and the Head of State is yet to name a cabinet team.

Political analysts have hypothesised that the delay is not normal and believe there are some factors that have necessitated the long wait.

The delay is also said to be influenced by a need to help Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 succession politics.

According to sources, Uhuru also wants to plan all major government appointments before naming his Cabinet to satisfy all political promised he made on the campaign trail as he gets into a “legacy-driven” second term.

However, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa on Friday last week said there is no delay since the names of the Cabinet Secretaries have already been written down just waiting for the announcement.

“There is absolutely no delay since there is a Cabinet in place, appointed by Uhuru Kenyatta," said Ichungwa.

Jubilee secretary-general Raphael Tuju also said Uhuru should not be pressured to name the cabinet since he is not breaking any constitutional requirement.

“It can even take a year. Whatever time the President decides, it his prerogative,” said Tuju.
