He has made mini-changes in his government retaining six cabinet secretaries.[Photo: The Standard]President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday released part of his new Cabinet that will help Jubilee administration achieve what he terms as his 'Big Four'.The President dropped 13 cabinet secretaries from his 2013 cabinet while retaining six.The six who survived the President's chopping board include Treasury CS Henry Rotich, Tourism CS Najib Balala, Transport CS James Macharia, Interior and Coordination of Government CS Fred Matiang'i who is also acting as Education CS, Energy CS Charles Keter and ICT CS Joseph Mucheru. But why did the President decide to retain the six while leaving out perceived performers like Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohammed who was seen as instrumental in shaping Kenya's foreign policy in Uhuru's first administration? We look at each of the six.Henry Rotich. He has been at the National Treasury since 2006 where he served as the Head of Macroeconomics before his elevation to the current position. He served the President himself when he was the Minister of Finance during Kibaki administration. The President may, dtherefore, see him as a person who understands him better and how he would want the financial policy of the country shaped in the next 5 years.Najib Balala. He is a seasoned politician and President Uhuru Kenyatta's face in the Coast region. Also Balala has been credited for reviving tourism sector while it was down on its knees in the wake of frequent terrorist attacks that had kept tourists away, in the early years of Uhuru's first term.James Macharia. He oversaw the successful completion of the first phase of standard gauge railway that has not only eased movement of people and goods, but also elevated Kenya's status in the region.Fred Matiang'i. His achievements are unaccountable. He successfully migrated the country from analogue to digital television transmission as ICT CS. In Education, he has introduced a new curriculum plus a whole lot of sweeping reforms in the sector that are currently being debated nationally.Charles Keter. The former Kericho Senator is Deputy President William Ruto's right hand man and an important figure in Rift Valley. His retention may only be all about the 2022 succession politics power play.Joseph Mucheru. He came to the cabinet late but his achievements can almost be felt by everyone. He is credited for introducing the technology that facilitated quick marking and release of both KCPE and KCSE exam results. This is said to have pleased the President. He is a former Google Kenya country manager.
