President Uhuru Kenyatta is walking a tight rope as he starts his second term in office. The Jubilee leader will not have it easy leading a nation which is clearly divided on the basis of tribes. The events that took place before and after the rerun show that Uhuru has to make tough decision for Jubilee supporters to celebrate his win.
To start with, Uhuru is expected to reward poll losers who have wholeheartedly pitched tents across the nation to ensure he ascends to power. The politicians were rejected by their people because of poor performance, corruption and other reasons. It will be hard to expect these leaders to better in different capacities if given chances to be part of the government.
Secondly, the succession debate is also going to be Uhuru’s toughest test. The head of state will choose between standing with his Deputy William Ruto or backing a member of his community. The commander in chief of the armed forces will have to solve the Ruto’s presidency puzzle before he leaves power come 2022.
Thirdly, corruption is still one of the greatest nightmares of the Jubilee government. A good number of leaders whose names have featured in lists of corruption have been retained by their people. Will Uhuru ignore their support he was accorded and deal with the corrupt leaders firmly without fear or favor?
