A number of schools in Makueni County are not ready to utilize relief food distributed by the county government because of claims of poison and aflatoxin.

According to Standard, some of the school heads from the region have raised concerns over the relief food. The institutions are located in Ukia ward, Kaiti constituency.

The teachers in these schools have been alleging the maize is not good for children’s consumption. This is after the county government under the leadership of Governor Kivutha Kibwana of Wiper procured around 10,600 bags of maize and 2,700 bags of beans.

The relief food, which was supposed to serve 240,000 pupils, was procured during the election period. The local daily also reported that most of the maize had molds but could not tell whether the contamination claims are true

On his part, the health Executive Dr.Andrew Mulwa said that the maize is fit for consumption, adding that there is no cause for alarm.

“This maize is free from any contamination, especially the notorious aflatoxin which is rampant in this region, I can now confidently confirm that after the tests done in the Nairobi based Government chemist,” said Dr. Mulwa, as quoted by the local daily
