Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is finally paying the price for interfering in his party’s nominations and favoring his preferred candidates. His Ukambani voters, who have always rallied behind him ever since he emerged as the community’s kingpin, on Saturday booed him in Kitui for clearly rigging out area county Senator David Musila.Mr Musila, who immediately resigned as Wiper chairman after realizing that the nomination exercise was not free and fair, was facing Governor Julius Malombe for the Wiper ticket in the gubernatorial contest. The former speaker of the National Assembly now plans to run as an independent candidate. And with his huge following, Mr Musyoka, Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate in the NASA coalition, is now a worried man. His most solid political base is turning against him as he watches. On Saturday, during the funeral of Alice Musila, Senator David Musila’s mother, the voters dismissed Kalonzo with boots when he said that he had not interfered to rig out the former Wiper chairman.“I am an honest and transparent person. I am stating clearly that I wasn’t involved,” Kalonzo said, as quoted by the Star. Many of Mr Musila’s voters are angry with Kalonzo and are likely to punish him on August 8 by not supporting the NASA presidential ticket. There are fears that if the Jubilee team lands in the county, many voters will easily be swayed to support the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Raila Odinga also ran into some trouble over the weekend when he asked his supporters to vote in a six piece — voting for only ODM candidates during the general election. Many supporters have not forgotten how he interfered in the ODM primaries and rigged in his preferred candidates. They have asked him never again to tell them who vote for at the county level.Just like in 2013, the actions of Raila and Kalonzo will make many of their potential voters to stay at home on election day.
