The University of Nairobi has this morning, Tuesday been closed indefinitely, due to what the campus senate termed as ‘deterioration security situation’.
The senate, in a tweet from the institution, further stated that students have been asked to vacate the halls of residence not later than 9.00 am.
“UON senate has today closed the University with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security situation. Students have been asked to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect but not later than 9.00am,” read te tweet.
This comes as the students once again rioted last night, barricading some roads around the institution.
There was unrest in the university last week, after police assaulted students, which left 27 of them with injuries.
The incident happened after the students staged demonstrations calling on the release of former SONU leader Babu Owino, who is currently the Embakasi East MP.
In last night’s incident, the students engaged police officers in running battles, after they blocked sections of Mamlaka Road and State House Road.
The students were further heard chanting and calling for the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi, saying he gave the go ahead for police officers to enter the institution.
