University students in the Coast region have threatened to go on strike if the government fails to resolve the ongoing lecturers and doctors’ strikes.
Speaking in Mombasa on Sunday, the students observed that the ongoing industrial action by the lecturers has affected learning in the higher learning institutions, adding that this could have a detrimental effect on their studies.
“Time is being wasted and economy is not moving. The president must act,” noted Frank Nyakundi who is a students' representative at the Technical University of Mombasa.
“Just like patients are dying in hospitals due to the strike, so do we. We are dying intellectually,” he added.
The students gave the government a one week ultimate to end the two strikes or they call for a countrywide university students strike.
The lecturers are demanding a pay rise signed in 2013.
