A spot check at various holiday homes, which offer self-catering units for a large number of domestic holidaymakers, have been flocking to the facility in droves. Mombasa is a preferred holiday destination for Kenyans and foreigners eager to sample its beautiful sandy beaches and tropical ambiance.
Sunset Paradise director Innocent Mugabe said that holiday homes help plug demand for beds in Mombasa during the holiday seasons. Mugabe says domestic tourists from Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru and Nyeri and others from Uganda and Rwanda have been patronizing apartment homes which have started sprouting around Mombasa in the past two years.
He says the fully equipped and high-quality holiday apartments with all the services of a hotel are marketed as “home away from home”. The hotelier said his establishment comprises 60 four-bedroom, 10 three-bedroom, and 10 two-bedroom apartments.
The visitors have the option of preparing their own meals or eating out at inbuilt restaurants, an option he said is popular with families on vacations. “Because of this flexibility we are becoming popular with budget travelers and furnished apartments are the next frontier in accommodations,” he noted.
He expressed optimism that tourism in Mombasa, will bounce back after the end of the long campaign period. According to Mugabe, security has improved significantly. Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki on his part says police have started securing places of worship, public beaches and other tourist spots across the coastal city. Achoki said security patrols have been intensified ahead of the Christmas and New year festivity.
