Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu on Wednesday afternoon oversaw the shutdown of a popular supermarket in Thika over stocking and selling alcohol.
Society Stores was shut down indefinitely as the Kiambu County Government continues with a crackdown on all liqour outlets that are operating without permit.
The society Stores which is located along Commercial Street was closed at 2:30pm during an inter-agency operation of Police patrol and county government reinforcement officers who ordered out all customers and employees of the shop before ordering the managers to close down the shop.
All employees in the shop denied all allegations saying that they operate within the confines of the law in the country.
The senior most employees read their motives in the raid, saying that their competitors are not at all affected even though they sell alcohol too.
“We have licences to sell all what we sell and we fail to understand why they picked on us. We have other supermarkets selling alcohol here in Thika but they have not been affected by this raid. They are still operating and selling alcohol even as we speak,” said the employee.
Workers too came in to defend the shop saying perishable goods will lead to big losses to the owner.
“The store will run into a loss in the tune of millions of shillings. We were just baking bread but we were forced to put off the oven and halt all the activities. We have ready food in our cafeteria notwithstanding other perishable goods such as milk. The loss is big,” a baker lamented.
