According to NGO coordination board executive director Fazul Mahamed, KHRC is alleged to be operating illegal bank accounts, employing expatriates fraudulently and failing to account for funds.
"KHRC cannot account for Sh1.2 billion that was in the account by October 4, 2016, in accordance with the NGOs Coordination Act 1990," reads part of the two-page letter sent to KHRC.
Mutua who is among the founders of the KHRC is one of Jubilee government biggest critics and analyst claimed that the axe on the commission may be because it was anticipating to petition the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The board boss further said KHRC has failed to pay Kenya Revenue Authority statutory taxes amounting to Sh100 million.
Fazul also ordered the Central Bank of Kenya governor to freeze the KHRC accounts.
