Addressing journalists at the KICC in Nairobi, Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said political violence violates the Constitution, specifically Article 38 which stipulates the rights to a free and fair election.

Kiraithe insisted that the government is committed to ensuring that the forthcoming August 8 General Election is held in a safe and secure atmosphere.

“Every citizen has a right to join, campaign and vote for a political party of their choice without intimidation,” said Kiraithe.

He said some of the acts that may land one in jail include: political incitement, hate speech, disruption of rival political rallies and intimidation.

Kiraithe added that the government will also be monitoring individuals engaging with organised criminal gangs activities, political intolerance and misuse of social media platforms.

The government spokesperson said such acts should be avoided ahead of the forthcoming elections. He also cautioned political leaders against engaging in political hooliganism by forming proscribed sects.
