Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar finally brought to an end speculations surrounding his political future when he joined Jubilee Party in an event held at the Serani Grounds on Sunday and presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
Omar had resigned as Wiper Secretary General just days after losing in his bid to oust Governor Hassan Joho.
And days later, he dumped the NASA coalition led by Raila Odinga, a move that raised questions on his next political move though many political analysts had predicted that the firebrand politician was warming up to Jubilee.
Though his move is seen as a risky gamble, Omar may pull off a political comeback with a bang.
However, that will also depend on some factors which may shape up Mombasa's political arena.
First, a win for President Kenyatta in the repeat presidential poll which is scheduled for October 26 will cushion him from the vagaries of political oblivion as he may be rewarded with a ministerial position to keep him politically relevant ahead of 2022.
Secondly, in the next five years, much may happen in the country's political scene and Mombasa may not be an opposition zone as it is now.
Already, Jubilee has made significant inroads in the region and it will just be a matter of time before the region charts a new political trajectory.
And for Omar, that will be a plus for him in his quest to make a swift return to politics.
With Joho not eligible to contest in the gubernatorial race in 2022, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir is seen by many as his heir apparent.
And given that the lawmaker does not have the same political clout as Joho,Omar may face a 'weak' opponent and finally clinch the seat which eluded him in 2017.
