Wildebeests and Zebras that migrated to the Maasai Mara national park from Tanzania have returned to the Serengeti park a month earlier over biting drought.
“Half of them have returned due to lack of pasture. We hope the rains that started last weekend will help generate grass for them to return. It has affected arrivals,” said Lily Waddington, a director with Osero Camp.
It is estimated that 1.6 million migrated into the country between July and August but lack of pasture has forced them back.
According to Waddington, between July and early September, arrivals of the animals ranged between 90 per cent and 80 per cent.
The migration usually marks the peak of the tourism season but currently hotels in the region are operating at below 60 per cent.
