The delay by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) to name its 2017 presidential flag bearer continues to cause fears among members and officials of the coalition with only fourteen months left to the next year's general election.
The delay has been linked to discontent among the co-principals Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula and Kalonzo Musyoka on who should be given the presidential ticket in 2017.
According to political analysts, the delay by Cord to settle on a presidential aspirant could affect its preparations for the 2017 polls.
Kiambu based analyst Peter Ngure, claims that the co-principals might not have agreed on who should vie for the top seat bearing in mind that they all have declared interest in the seat.
Mr Ngure also observes that the delay by Cord in naming their flag bearer is giving their opponents (Jubilee) a chance to get popular.
“I think Cord co-principals have not agreed on who they should give the presidential ticket in 2017,” he said, adding that it is better for the coalition to name their flag bearer.
Mr Ngure also notes that Cord leaders could be afraid of a fall out in the coalition in case they settle on a candidate who members might not want to support.
“It is a delicate matter that Cord must handle carefully in terms of who they want to be a flag bearer to avoid a fall out,” he added.
A section of the coalition members have been urging the co-principals to settle on their flag bearer for 2017.
Last week, Wiper Chairman David Musila said that the delay on settling a presidential aspirant for the coalition was creating impatient among members.
Musila gave the principals 30 days to settle on the coalition flag bearer for 2017.
However Cord leader Raila Odinga said that the decision to settle on a presidential candidate is not easy as it may seem.
“We understand all this and soon we will make a decision,” said Raila during the launch of Kalonzo’s website at Panari hotel on Thursday last week.
Raila, Kalonzo and Wetangula have shown interest in the presidential seat.
On Sunday during a prayer rally in Machakos, Kalonzo begged Raila and Wetangula to endorse him as coalition presidential contender in 2017.
