Battle lines have been drawn and declarations for the seat are now the order of the day.

But the million dollar question is; Will Jubilee defeat the Opposition in a bid to control the port city?

With the current political waves in both camps, much is expected to happen in the run up to the 2017 general election.

From the Jubilee coalition, three names have been fronted to battle it out with Cord.

They are businessman Suleiman Shabal, Tourism Cabinet secretary Najib Balala and former Kenya Ports Authority manager Abdhallah Mwaruwa.

But if what was witnessed on Saturday during an Iftar hosted in Lohanna hall in Mombasa is anything to go by, then the Jubilee coalition needs to go back to the drawing board.

There was fury, allegedly occasioned by Mombasa JAP chairman, Ali Mwatsahu when he rallied those present to support Balala through a consensus.

He is a staunch supporter of the minister. On his part, the Jubilee front runner, Shabal took it upon himself and declared if really the rest were men enough, they have to do what real men do; meet him at the ballot box.

This did not go down well with Mwatsahu, who indicated that Jubilee would lose the seat again as was the case in 2003 if they repeated the same mistake.

"If we say that everyone should go for the nominations, our coalition stands to lose the seat. I propose we go by consensus to back one candidate to square it out with the Opposition ," Mwatsahu was quoted by the Star.

This shows that there are increasing cracks in the Jubilee ship on the sticky and delicate nomination process which gives parties nightmares due to defections of candidates who don't qualify to get the nomination certificate.

The Cord coalition too is faced with a tricky balancing act where all its three leading Mombasa luminaries have declared interest in the seat.

The incumbent Governor Hassan Joho will defend his seat and will fight it out with Senator Hassan Omar and Hezron Awiti for the Cord ticket.

If Jubilee mishandles the nominations, the seat will be for opposition to keep.
