Kenyans have been asked to take advantage of the One Stop border Post (OSBP) that was commissioned on Saturday by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni.
Addressing the press on Friday, Busia County Chief of Staff Robert Papa said Kenyans should take advantage of the OSBP to make money through cross border trade.
Papa said as a county they need to plan on how locals can reap benefits from the OSBP.
"Busia has a lot of fish with some coming from Lake Turkana. In order to turn around the fortunes of our people we need to have a fish auction centre where a fish processing plant will be built to create business," he said on Friday.
He said the Busia County Government is in talks with the Customs Department to have a customs bonded warehouse at the border point.
"People crossing to Uganda are allowed to transit while those arriving into the country can clear their goods at the border instead of travelling all the way to Mombasa Port. The County Government is also in the process of setting aside land for an Export Processing Zone for factory outlets.
"Various companies will stock their goods for ease of collection by East African Community Member states.
"Our only request to President Uhuru is to consider putting up a trailer and bus parks in exchange for the county government offering land for the construction of the OSBP facilities in Busia and Malaba.
He said as a county they will come up with a policy where the National government will compensate the county for loss of revenue.
