A High Court in Nairobi has ordered four Administration Police (AP) officers charged with murder of human rights lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and taxi driver will remain in custody until the case is determined.
The four include Leonard Mwangi, Silvia Wanjiku Fredrick Leliman and Stephen Chebulet
Justice Jessie Lesiit ruled that even though bail was a constitutional right, the Court could not set them free, owing to the gravity of the offense and the fact that surround the abduction, torture and heinous killings of the deceased.
She said the Director of Public of Prosecutions (DPP) had presented compelling reasons for the four to remain in custody as their release was likely to terrify potential witnesses and victims of the affected families.
She said the Court could not consider only the accused person rights, but it had also a duty to protect the public interest.
The mutilated bodies of Willie Kimani, his client and taxi driver were retrieved from the Oldonyo Sabuk River on June 30.
Their bodies were stashed in gunny bags.
They all went missing shortly after appearing at the Mavoko Law Courts on June 23.
