Having been pitted against Ghana’s duo of Sonnie Badu and SP Koffi Sarpong, Nigeria's Uche Agu, Frank Edwards and Sinach together with Ntokozo Mbambo of South Africa and Icha Kavons from Congo, Willy Paul's win is a classical case owing to the fact that he came against artists who command a great popularity from around the world.

The 'Fanya' hit-song maker owed his success greatly to his fans for voting for him and cited that "many times a prophet might not be accepted in his home town" as he is in Kenya.

“I thank God for the win. Some people would probably say Afrimma ‘gifted’ me the award; but that is not the case. I have been consistent, creative and appreciative of the genuine support that I get from fans,” Willy Paul said.

Nigeria’s Flavour smiled home with the  Best Artiste of the Year Award while Diamond Platinumz of Tanzania was crowned Best Male Artiste in East Africa.
