[Photo/the-star]The National Super Alliance (Nasa) has won one of its battles ahead of the October 26 fresh presidential poll. This is after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissions sealed a deal with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to search for a new supplier who will print the ballot papers for the repeat election. This means that the Dubai-based Al Ghurair firm might lose the lucrative deal to print ballot papers. The Opposition leaders in its ‘irreducible minimums’ had demanded IEBC to drop Al Ghurair from printing the papers alleging the firm was involved in bungling of the August 8 polls. It is also a relief to Kenyan taxpayers as the UN agency will meet the entire cost through its programme dubbed, ‘Strengthening the electoral process in Kenya’.According to Standard Digital, this development was revealed in a letter from electoral body to the NASA secretariat boss, Norman Magaya.“The commission has a financing agreement with UNDP, and in accordance to this agreement, has offered to procure ballot papers and the result forms. This assistance is meant to aid restore public confidence and trust in the integrity of the ballot papers and result forms, as well as address concerns raised by the Supreme Court,” IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati is quoted by the daily.Technology provider OT Morpho/Safran of France will however be retained due to time limitations.
