With less than three years to much-anticipated 2017 polls, senior members of Wiper Democratic Party from Nyamira have called upon their party leaders to support ODM’s Raila Odinga if at all the opposition coalition wishes to give Jubilee government a serious competition.
Led by seasoned Kitutu Masaba politician Mr Victor Ogeto on Monday, the leaders said Mr Musyoka should give Odinga a backing for the last time as he prepares to go for the top seat in 2022.
According to them, Mr Odinga was best suited to challenge the Jubilee government given his vast experience in both opposition and government politics.
“We would like to call upon our party leaders Mr Kalonzo to support Mr Odinga as we plan for 2022," Mr Ogeto said.
"We are comfortable with Odinga’s leadership in Cord and he has vast knowledge in both opposition and government politics since he has served in both.”
Nyamira Wiper chairman Peter Mayaka said their move comes at a time when Cord had a real chance to take over the government and it would avoid unnecessary fall out in the coalition ahead of presidential nominations.
“We are also trying to be a bit precautious because Cord has a real chance. We don’t want fallouts of our party leaders whenever we go to nominations and I think Odinga is old enough and this might be his last try,” he said.
They, however, urged Mr Odinga to support Musyoka in 2022 as a way of showing solidarity within the party.
Last week, the Cord retreat at Naivasha resolved that the three principals choose a presidential candidate amongst themselves, something the Nyamira WDP leaders think will not be easy.
