Wiper Party is set to hold nominations on Saturday in Nairobi to determine who between Nyali MP Hezron Awiti and Senator Omar Hassan will contest for Mombasa governorship during the forthcoming General elections. Both Omar and Awiti have insisted that they have what it takes to replace the incumbent Ali Hassan Joho. The nominations come after the secret panel whose members were appointed by both parties failed to agree on who to back for the region’s top seat in the August polls.Calls by Former vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, who is also the Wiper Party leader, for the two to agree on who to field for the seat between themselves did not bear fruits. Kalonzo, on Saturday, announced that 600 delegates of the party are going to be involved in the nomination as the party strives to avoid fallout ahead of the General polls. Speaking to the Star, Awiti said that he is ready for the primaries, adding that he is confident of defeating Omar with the huge margin if the exercise is conducted in a free and fair manner. “We will issue a press conference when we land in Mombasa,” he said. Omar could not be reached to comment on the primaries when contacted by the Star. There have been speculations that the party will not hold free and fair nominations despite Kalonzo assuring the aspirants of the same. The party was yet to agree on the list of delegates to take part in the nomination by Yesterday. The candidate who will lose during the Saturday has the free to defect if he feels like not backing the winner for the seat.
