The Wiper party has expressed concern that the Jubilee government is doing very little in terms of instituting mitigation measures to combat the effects of the ongoing drought.
Party secretary-general Hassan Omar said more than 2 million Kenyans were at the risk of starvation as one of the most severe droughts ever witnessed in decades, ravages the country.
"Lack of food, pastures and water has affected both humans and animals. Scores of schools have been closed in areas such as Kilifi, Turkana, Kitui, Kwale, Samburu and other Counties due to the drought. Hundreds more face closure if measures are not taken to save the situation,'' he said.
Party leaders wondered what happened to the Sh15 billion El Nino Emergency Funds, saying the money was set aside for El Nino rains 'that never came'.
"What happened to the cash? And what is Jubilee regime doing to ensure that thousands of Kenyans and their livestock do not perish as a result of this drought?''
By now, Omar said the government should have mobilised all the national emergency machinery to take food and water to all the affected regions.
"Wiper has no evidence that Jubilee is concerned about this issue, save for the few instances when certain Jubilee officials carry small tokens of food rations to hungry wananchi and pose for cameras as a campaign gimmick!'' said the Mombasa senator during a National Executive Council meeting.
