Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior now wants the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) overhauled in the wake of contraband sugar flooding the market.
The Wiper senator wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to order an overhaul of the two agencies in a bid of saving Kenyans from consuming counterfeit products.
According to the Makueni senator, KEBS and KRA have failed to safeguard the lives of Kenyans.
Speaking to journalists at the Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, Kilonzo said the importation of counterfeits is a serious threat to Kenyans.
He said people behind the importation must be dealt with accordingly.
“The president should exercise his powers and order overhaul at KEBS and KRA in the interest of Kenyans,” Kilonzo said.
The senator said corruption is to blame for the flooding of counterfeit products in the Kenyan market.
He asked the police and Director of Public Prosecutions to move with speed and arraign suspects linked to the contraband sugar to court.
“We want to see people being taken to jail and locked up for exposing Kenyans lives to danger,” Kilonzo added.
Police have seized millions of contraband sugar in nationwide crackdown that is still going on.
This comes as pressure piles on the government to name people behind the illegal importation.
On Monday, KEBS Managing Director Charles Ongwae and other officials were charged in court over the importation of substandard fertilizer and fake standardization sticker marks.
The officials denied the two offenses and were released on Sh10 Million bond with 3 Million surety and an alternative of Sh2 million cash bail.
