The battle for the next Kenya's chief justice is on and Judicial service commissioners are faced with a huge task.
Among the aspirants is Professor of law Makau Mutua. Makau has bagged numerous academic awards and distinctions. An alumni of Kitui high school, Alliance high school and University of Nairobi, Makau has managed to become one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of law.
According to journals available online, the 58-year old did masters in law at university of Dar es Salaam before proceeding to Harvard law school.
He is the founder of Kenya human rights commission. The renown columnist, who has written for the Sunday Nation newspaper for seven years, is known to have chaired a task force that led to establishment of the truth, justice and reconciliation commission, TJRC.
In December 2012, he was appointed to break board of advisors of the international development law organization. In July 2013, he was appointed to the Moreland commission to the rank of deputy attorney general by New York state attorney general and in December 2014 he stepped down as Dean of the university of Buffalo law school after serving fro seven years.
With a truck-full of academic papers, will Makau fit in the shoes of former chief justice Willy Mutunga? Well, some Kenyans think so while others like Miguna Miguna think otherwise.
On a televised interview with KTN's Jeff Koinange on May 13, 2016, Miguna Miguna brushed off Makau describing him as, "a short bald guy with no sense of security. A political conman who is literally begging the Jubilee government to appoint him as the next chief justice."
