There is an increased practice of burning down bushes along River Athi in the outskirts of Athi River town.
This act must be condemned and stopped immediately as it is against environmental conservation.
An investigation conducted by this writer revealed that there are several residents of Mavoko Sub County who live on environmental destruction to earn their daily livelihoods.
The culprits burn charcoal with several others harvesting sand in both private and public land thereby reducing the land value.
Interestingly enough, there is a lot of ignorance among other members of the public and leaderships both from county and national governments on the malpractice.
Not many including locals seem to care about environmental degradation and pollution from the illicit acts of burning bushes.
On Saturday morning at 10.00am, casuals who handle solid wastes and garbage in Machakos County Government, Mavoko Sub County were spotted burning litter along a road within Athi River town.
The lit fire spread to grass along the highway thereby causing tension among residents and passers by as some thought it could spread and become disastrous.
This shows how a society can at time become irresponsible and insensitive to the environment in which they live.
Even though Athi River is an industrial town and already seriously polluted, people should desist from irresponsible practices that expose residents to more health risks.
