A few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered NTSA out of all roads, reports indicate that drivers along the dangerous stretch of Salgaa are not observing lane discipline.
The stretch, along the Nakuru-Eldoret road, is considered a danger zone and took lives of hundreds of Kenyans in the last months of 2017.
Most drivers going downhill normally use the climbing lane, which is meant for vehicles going uphill.
NTSA, before it was ordered off the road, was enforcing the law around that area by fining motorists found flaunting the rules as much as Sh3, 000.
Motorists have however welcomed the president’s directive, saying the authority was only out to make money from motorists.
President Kenyatta heeded many Kenyans’ call to disband the authority, which they said was doing little to curb the high number of accidents on many roads.
The country experienced its worst festive season in the transport sector, losing hundreds of Kenyans in a span of one month in 2017.
Many of the cases were attributed to careless driving by motorists, with others caused by poor observation of traffic rules.
The NTSA had banned night travel by PSVs as one way of reducing the number of accidents that occurred at night.
