Ms Teresiah Mumbi claimed that police officers from Huruma Police station forcefully stripped her because they doubted her gender.

Ms Mumbi who works as a tout along the Huruma route said she was arrested on May 15 alongside other touts while they were on duty.

The 33-year-old woman said that she and other touts were picking up passengers at the Kariobangi roundabout when they were arrested by police officers.

The officers then allegedly asked for a Sh400 bribe and when it was not forthcoming, they threw her in the cells.

She said the officers had a sudden interest in her features because of beard hairs on her chin and that they would come into her cell, look at her curiously and then leave.

Narrating her ordeal to citizentv.co.ke, Ms Mumbi said moments later, the officers paraded her in front of them before two of them ordered her to strip saying they wanted to ascertain her gender.

She pleaded with the officers not to humiliate her by making her strip but her pleas fell on deaf ears as the police were adamant that she should undress.

After her clothes were removed, the officers then allegedly proceeded to touch her private parts.

Ms Mumbi said she later told the OCS what had transpired but the OCS defended the officers and no action was taken.

“Two officers came and told me to take off my clothes. They then examined me. I’m not sure what they saw but they told me to return to my cell,” she said.

Lawyer Danstan Omar said action by the officers to strip her was against the law and unconstitutional and an infringement on her privacy.

“If the police have doubts on one’s gender they should take them to a doctor for confirmation,” said lawyer Omar as quoted by citizentv.co.ke.
