Human rights activist Beatrice Gathoni Kamau, famous for her work during former President Daniel arap Moi’s time in government, is vying for the Nyandarua senate seat.
The founder of Release Political Prisoners (RPP), who is in the race with two men, is the only female candidate for the Nyandarua seat hoping to garner votes from the people of Nyandarua on an independent ticket.
Ms. Kamau who contested for the Nyandarua woman representative seat in 2013 lost to Ms. Wanjiku Muhia.
She says that the unfair process forced her to run as an independent candidate.
She promises that if elected, she plans to introduce a Bill in Parliament to ensure that those who fought for independence are taken care of.
“I was very instrumental in coming up with the Political Parties Act. By then I was a board member of Ford Asili and we discussed the act at length. We then believed that political parties are supposed to be guided by ideologies and should not be ethnic,” she said.
She is optimistic about the outcome in the coming August 8th, general elections.
She is competing against 25 year old John Methu and Mwangi Githiomi a former minister during President Kibaki’s administration.
