A middle aged woman was on Wednesday arraigned in Kisii Law Court for charges of selling illicit brew in Bitoto Village, Kisii County.

Senior Magistrate J.M. Njoroge ruled that Concepta Nyaanga, the accused, will be imprisoned for operating an illegal business after the accused pleaded guilty.

According to the Judge’s ruling, the accused violated Alcoholic Drinks Control Act of Kenya, for operating and dealing in alcoholic drink without a licence.

Initially Nyaanga pleaded with the court to pardon her for the offences, unfortunately she was not granted the same.

“I am requesting for forgiveness and I will never indulge in illicit brew business in the area,” pleaded Nyaanga.

Alcoholic dens around Bitoto area is said to be on the rise. Last week there was a crackdown conducted by the police in order to reduce the menace, locals illicit brewers seem to have found an alternative way of ‘quenching their potential customers’ thirst in secluded areas.

Hyrene Amanga, a local resident, claimed that the most affected lot by the illicit brew are men, adding that they over indulge in drug abuse, making cases of broken families to hike.

“Majority of men in this area are drunkards, illicit brew business has even worsen the situation because they cannot provide for their families, hence making many family break-ups,’’ alleged Amanga.
