Police in Igonga Divison, Kisii County are holding an elderly woman over an abortion.
Ms Martha Magero is suspected to have helped her underaged daughter abort a four-month-old foetus on Tuesday evening.
Area police boss Nicholas Omondi confirmed the arrest saying that it was after members of the public alerted the police.
“Members of the public tipped the police about the abortion. Police acted immediately and arrested the accused who is also a tomato vendor at Kasarani shopping centre. She is helping us with crucial information which will help us prepare charge sheets before she will be charged in court on Thursday,” said Omondi.
Omondi said the daughter who has already recorded a statement admitted that her mother pushed her to abort the pregnancy.
“We questioned the daughter and she admitted that she was helped by her mother to abort her pregnancy. Abortion is illegal and punishable by law. The accused is currently held at Gesonso police station waiting to be arraigned in court where she will be charged over murder and send a warning to those still doing abortion in the dark,” said the police boss.
