The woman who claimed to be the owner of the vehicle behind the Mombasa ‘witchcraft’ drama was on Thursday arraigned before the Shanzu Law Court.Elizabeth Sarah Wetaba pleaded guilty to giving false information to police before Senior Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache. The court heard that Weteba claimed to have lost a car she had allegedly hired on September 1, 2017.Wetaba was arrested on Wednesday together with four other people suspected to have stage-managed the incident in an attempt to defraud Bamburi residents. She was also accused of giving a false name - Catherine Kandubia - at the Bamburi Police Station while recording her statement.Wetaba asked the court to release her on bond pending the next case hearing but Prosecutor Winnie Kabinga opposed the bond application.Kabinga told the magistrate that investigations into the case are ongoing; adding that they believe the accused is part of the criminal gang that was arrested at Bamburi. The prosecutor further said the ownership of the motor vehicle is yet to be established despite Wetaba being the first to make the report.According to Kabinga, the prosecution intends to consolidate the two cases if the five suspects are found guilty of the crime. She said they have more evidence from the CCTV cameras that showed how the whole event was staged.Magistrate Mochache denied the application by the accused and ordered she be remanded in police custody. The case will be mentioned on September 13.
