A 28-year-old woman was on Thursday arraigned before a Nakuru court for allegedly killing her six hours old child.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate David Kimei, Emmaculate Achieng was charged with killing her child a few hours after delivering.
She denied the charges and told the court the child did not die out of her negligence or deliberate actions.
Achieng was arrested on June 22 in her village in Rhonda, Nakuru West sub-county when police were alerted by neighbors who wanted to beat and lynch her saying this was not the first time the woman was ‘committing’ the act.
The prosecution sought for a one-week adjournment to give Achieng time to undergo psychiatric test and post-natal medication.
“We request the case be mentioned at a later date to allow the accused undergo mental examination. She will be expected to record a statement since yesterday she was unwell and could not record,” said Hillary Sungoiyo.
The court allowed the adjournment to allow Achieng receives medical care.
She will be detained at Bondeni Police Station.
The case will be mentioned on June 30.
