A Kisumu judge has ordered that a punishment be prescribed by the Registrar for a woman who disappeared from the court shortly after she was convicted of murder.
Justice David Majanja ordered that Martha Nyangol remains in custody as required adding that a short punishment will be taken against her pending her sentence.
Nyangol was presented in court on Thursday by her advocate Steve Odumbe who was tasked to explain why her client quickly vacated the court premises after being convicted of the murder of her husband Jared Otieno.
Odumbe told the court that her client was very apologetic of the incident citing that it was never intentional.
“My client has been known to be a very obedient woman who has never missed even one of her court sessions. This shows that she never meant any malice, when she left court,” Odumbe said.
Odumbe explained that her client informed him that after a little chat with the prison guard present in court, she was told to go and come back on April 11 when she was set to be sentenced and that is why she left the court.
In a rejoinder outside the court, Odumbe blamed the media for what he termed as misreporting adding that her client did not escape custody.
“Would she have escaped, she may not have presented herself in court when it came to the fore that she had disobeyed a court order,” stated Odumbe.
