An elderly woman on Thursday morning escaped death after a public latrine which she had visited within the county commissioner’s headquarters caved moments after getting out.
The mother of three had come to the county headquarters to process for a registration certificate for her daughter who is set to sit for standard eight examinations this year.
Narrating her close shave to this reporter, she said that it was a miracle that the latrine that looked strong collapsed only seconds after getting out.
“I have seen the hand of God today because I could have been buried inside the latrine had it collapsed still in. It’s a miracle and can’t really tell how this happened,” she said.
The latrine was under the maintenance of the defunct municipal councils before the county governments came into place.
Meanwhile the department of health has urged the public to ensure that they prepare or eat food under hygienic conditions to avert any health hazard that may be brought about by the incident.
“I urge the surrounding community like offices to ensure that they exercise high hygiene standards when handling foods so as they don’t contract diarrhoea from the open latrine,” said David Oyaro who is the Nyamira South Sub County Public health officer.
Oyaro said that plans are underway to ensure the place is covered to avoid any spread of diseases.
